8 Telltale Signs Its Time To Replace Your Furnace

June 27, 2023 by Elizabeth

As every Northeast Ohio homeowner knows, fall and winter can bring unpredictable weather. From cold, rainy fall days to snowstorms in the winter, it’s important to create a safe and warm environment at home. However, if your current gas furnace is struggling to provide comfort during the winter, it may be time to replace it. But how do you know when you need a new furnace? Use our checklist to help determine if it’s time to replace your furnace:

1. The Age of Your System

Start by checking the age of your furnace. If you’re like most homeowners, it’s likely your furnace was already in place when you moved into your home, which means it could be at the end of its lifespan. Locate the owner’s manual or look up the system’s model number which should be located on the furnace itself. The average lifespan of a furnace ranges from 15-20 years, depending upon maintenance and usage.

2. Rising Energy Bills

An increase in energy bills can mean that your system is running less efficiently.

3. Excessive Dust, Dirt, Soot or Rust Particles

If you noticed more dust, dander, soot, rust or dirt building up within your home while your furnace is running, it’s a sign to install a new system.

4. Home Humidity Problems

Humidity within your home is a concern for all homeowners in the winter, especially if you have wood floors. If you’ve noticed the air within your home to be dry, your furnace could be to blame.

5. Rooms are Heating Unevenly

If you noticed different rooms within your home are heated unevenly (or not heated at all) it’s likely due to your furnace. As your furnace ages, it can be more difficult to push heat evenly throughout your home.

6. Furnace Becomes Unusually Noisy or Develops Rattles, Buzzes or Hums

If you notice your system running louder than normal or develops rattles, buzzes or hums, it’s time to replace due to cracks, leaks or other structural issues.

7. Furnace Has Visible Signs of Rust or Cracks in or Around System

Going back to the last point, if you’ve noticed signs of rust or cracks developing in or around your furnace, it’s time to replace. This naturally occurs over time as your furnace ages.

8. Frequent Repairs

Look back at your repair bills and note how many times you had to call on an HVAC contractor to repair your heating system within the last two years. If you see your repair man more than your friends, it’s time to call for a free estimate.

If you have noticed any of the above signs from your furnace, it’s critical to speak with an HVAC contractor to discuss replacement options. Not only is it important to have a working heating system throughout winter, but it’s important to keep your family safe. Problems with your furnace can lead to health issues from carbon monoxide, dust and dander, and other things that are bad to inhale.
