Signs your heating system is failing

Your heating system is getting older

If your heating system is old enough to get a drivers license and maybe even get a drink, it might be time to start looking at a replacement! The average life span of a modern furnace is somewhere between 16 and 20 years, but could be much shorter without regular maintenance. At this age, your furnace is probably not running as efficiently as it once did.

You've made a lot of recent repairs

Some people will spend a lot of money making repairs to an old system in an effort to save money. However, this is a costly mistake. If your furnace is starting to show its wrinkles and you've had to replace components such as control boards or even a heat exchanger, it may be more economical to just put that money toward a new furnace.

A good rule of thumb: multiply your repair bill times the age of the heating system.

  • If it's more than 3,000, replace it
  • If it's less than 2,000, repair it
  • If it's in between, repair it if you plan on moving in the next couple of years. If you're not moving, consider replacing it

You're paying more each month than ever before

Regular maintenance visits will greatly help your heating system run more safely and efficiently, but eventually there's not much you can do to stop the standard wear and tear from years of use. You will start to notice you are paying more and more each month to heat your home. Just as your car get's less efficient with age, so does your furnace.

Strange smells

If your furnace smell like rotten eggs, call us immediately! Your furnace could have a gas leak. If you smell something like metal or burning iron, this could indicate a problem with your motor. Items may also rub together if not lubricated correctly and cause burnouts.

Strange noises

Every furnace makes some noise; no surprise there. If you notice an unusual new sound, like squeaks, squeals, pops or rattles, it might indicate that something has come loose or failed inside your furnace. If you notice the blower is running more frequently than it used to, that’s also a red flag.

Many people are not aware your furnace runs all year long. This is the hardest working piece of equipment in your home, and when it breaks, it's best to have it professionally checked. Trying to repair your furnace on your own can not only costly to your wallet, it can endanger your life.

Jackson Comfort went above and beyond to get our tankless water heater installed before a holiday weekend so we would not be without hot water for 4 days. (We had come home from vacation to find our hot water heater toasted)

Bill, Medina

Jackson has been our HVAC service provider since 1984. They have always been courteous, timely, and knowledgeable. I strongly recommend them to any acquaintances to handle their A/C, heating needs.
