Tips for Winterizing Your Outdoor Plumbing

Preparing your home for winter is critical, especially when it comes to your outdoor plumbing.  Your pipes, spigots and other outdoor fixtures do not have the same level of protection as the plumbing inside your house so it’s important to take the proper precautions when it comes to exposing them to freezing temperatures.

• It's important to choose fixtures, valves, and pipes designed specifically for use in outdoor plumbing.
• Disconnect and drain garden hoses. Store them in a protected area.
• Winterize your faucets. There are two types of outdoor faucets. One has a shut-off valve; the other is a freeze-proof outdoor faucet. For those with a shut-off valve, close the valve and then open the spigots so the lines can thoroughly drain. Leave them open until spring.
• Insulate any exposed pipes.
• Clear your gutters, drains, and downspouts of leaves and any other forms of debris to prevent freezing and clogs.
• Winterize your irrigation system by following manufacturer’s specifications.
